Oil paint is typically applied to canvas panels, stretched canvasses or wooden panels.  These paints perform best with a primer as a foundation coat due to their oily base.  A product called Gesso is the most common primer used.

Difference Between Oil and Acrylic Paint?

Simply put, oil paints are oil-based and acrylics are water-based.  Oil paints are formed using colour pigments and natural oils such as linseed oil, walnut oil and safflower oil for example.  They are blended with binders to form into the thick consistency you get in a tube.  They are thinned and broken down, or extended, using chemical solvents such as turpentine or Sansodor and extended using linseed oil, Liquin and other mediums.   In contrast, acrylic paint is water-based.  It is also thick in consistency but can be broken down with water or acrylic mediums such as glossy or matte medium, modelling paste, texture mediums and many others.
