Felt used in crafts:
Felt, or acrylic felt has a wide variety of craft, hobby, school, and home uses and comes in 5 metre rolls, sheets and assortment packs. The one we stock is 100% acrylic and comes in a good range of colours, has good thickness and does not fray when cut. It should not be confused with wool felt or felting because this is quite a different type of fabric. Christmas, Halloween and school needlecraft and home economics season are the most popular periods of the year for this craft. Colours such as Red, Green and White are the most commonly used colours at Christmas, and everything from Santa stockings, decorations, hats, Christmas jumpers, bags, to table centres, flowers, door wreaths and so much more can be made from or embellished with felt. At Halloween the most popular colours and black, white and orange. Witches hats, cloaks, masks, and costume accessories can be shaped, cut, stitched and stuck to create the most fantastic costumes. School projects in needlecraft use single pieces and rolls. They can be easily cut, sewn and stuck using sewing thread, embroidery thread, Tacky Glue or a good quality PVA adhesive.
Acrylic felt is a synthetic version of the more traditional wool type. Some of it is blended and has a wool content of approx. 20 – 30%. This is more expensive that 100% acrylic and has a softer feel. Pure Wool felt was originally used to make clothes, hats, saddles, mats, blankets and even tents in remote places like Tibet and Mongolia. The traditional wool version is still used as a good insulating fabric in certain remote areas that have extremely cold climates, even though modern fabrics are commonplace now.
