Watercolour paint allows artists to create delicate washes, soft blends, and vibrant layers of colour. Manufacturers have produced them by combining finely ground pigments with a water-soluble binder, usually gum arabic. Artists activate the paint with water and apply it with brushes to a suitable paper or other absorbent surfaces.

Artists use watercolour paint to capture light, atmosphere, and movement with fluid, transparent effects. By adding more water, painters create soft tones and subtle transitions, while stronger pigment mixtures produce bold, vivid colour.  Techniques such as layering, glazing, and wet-on-wet painting give artists endless creative possibilities.
